Do you generally snap photos on your phone and post them to Facebook without saving them anywhere else? Or do you do what I do, snap them and let Google back them up on Google Photos?
Facebook and Google have both gone down before. What if Facebook went down and actually lost every one of your photos and videos? (It is a possibility, slim but there.)
The only way since creation to get your photos out of Facebook to back them up has been to download them and reupload them to save somewhere else. Coming soon, there will be an easier way!
Facebook announced some time ago that it was going to implement the open-source data portability framework as the first phase of ‘Data Transfer Project,’ an initiative the company launched last year in collaboration with Google, Apple, Microsoft, and Twitter. (I’m wondering if they are really competitors? LOL)
Now they are announcing a new feature that will allow you to transfer your Facebook photos and videos to your Google Photos accounts, or elsewhere, —directly and securely without needing to download and reupload it. That is so time-saving!
Currently, this feature has only been released in Ireland. (I’ve always wanted to go there.) The rest of the planet is to get it in early 2020 – Yay!
This feature has been built using the Data Transfer Project (DTP), a universal data import/export protocol that aims to give users more control over their data and let them quickly move it between online services or apps whenever they want. Then it explains in more detail the technical info behind it all so I’ll leave that out.
But, “Rather than expecting every company to build its own system from scratch, this open-source framework allows them to share any improvements in the framework as well as adapters and data models,” Facebook said.
So far adapters have been created for 13 service providers and more are to come. Keep an eye out for this fabulous addition so you are sure to save those precious digital photos in a couple of places just in case.
