Hashtags, we all know what they are and that we can use them on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest (and probably a few more sites…). For instance, we can use them for:
Events – Digital Marketing for Business used DMFB2014 this year for their event. That way everyone could find out what is going on tweet by tweet.
Hashtags Trending – We can look up and use the tags that are trending to get more people to our posts – of course only if appropriate.
Branding – Some companies use them for branding, whether it is their company name or company products.
Searching – You can use a hashtag so that your comment will be picked up on regular searches say for #hashtags or #socialmedia or the big one, #Google.
So basically we know that there are all kinds of creative ways to use hashtags on the different sites. You don’t want to use too many in any one post though – maybe 2 or 3 maximum. If it looks too congested take one out.
What’s the other great use?
IN YOUR EMAIL. Yep, that’s right. You can put a hashtag at the bottom of a specific email so that you can search your email and it will come right up. (The reason I say bottom is so that it is not as noticeable and is out of the way.)
If you are like me, you are getting quite a few emails these days and some of your folders that you store them in are becoming large, to say the least. If you need to find an email, something that you sent or replied to, by putting a hashtag in it you can find it much quicker then sifting through all those folders or pages of emails themselves. Particularly when it has several people involved in it making it a bit unsure as to what where you might have stored it originally!
You would use a hashtag that would be very particular to the type of content you are communicating about.
Example: You have many emails going back and forth to different members of different companies regarding setting up a meeting. This can take 10 or 20 emails before everyone agrees to a date and time. When everyone finally agrees you can confirm it and place a hashtag in it of the date (#July7) or what the meeting is going to be about (#socialmediaplanning). Whatever key term you would remember when looking for it.
You can use this hashtag for multiple emails, but try to keep them specific to the email you are putting it in so it is easier to find. Don’t want too many emails with the exact same hashtag or you will have the same problem finding it as with all the folders and pages!
I have verified this works well in Gmail and Yahoo, along with Outlook Exchange. I’m thinking it works on computer-based Outlook too but was unable to test it there. (Sorry, I don’t have that so I can’t say for sure but it is easy to test if you use that or Firefox.)
